Indian Cultural Centre

Design Studio 6 (Graduation Project) - Semester 2, 2012

Project:
PUBLIC HIGH-RISE
Wynyard

Design Statement:

This proposed Indian Cultural Centre promotes cross-cultural knowledge in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, a terminating vista to Wynyard Park along York St. As an urban public building, the project embraces both Indian and Australian culture, translated through heightened spatial experiences within every program.

With strong directionality in the physical street grid and pedestrian activity along York St, the geometric lines from Wynyard Park converges at the site, hence a determinant in floor planning. Vertical emphasis is highlighted through facade articulation as a direct response of geometrical continuity. Not only acting as a sun-shading device for this predominantly north-facing site, this screen-like facade is an interpretation of Indian perforated screens, jaali , that creates an interplay of light and shadows. Nonetheless, the facade is proposed to structurally tie-back the building to its core, allowing large voids and vertical extensions of gallery space.

The additional program introduced into the project is a communal bathhouse that aims to gather people to be physically and spiritually involved within evocative spatial transitions of its modern temperature-varied baths. This program aims to foster a strong sense of communal activity while reflecting an important cultural symbol of the India - water. While water constitutes as a significant part of Indians’ everyday rituals,  the bathhouse plan reflects an Indian courtyard, having a central space, branching out to various baths that differ by water depths, temperatures and volumes.

Spiritual Bathhouse in Sydney's CBD

at the moment - I'm working on my graduation project and here's just a 3dsmax render in progress for an additional program, a bathhouse, in an Indian Cultural Centre project, proposed in the heart of Sydney's CBD. The small site is a terminating vista to Wynyard Park that has potentials to be a visual extension of the communal space.
